Erik ten Hag has insisted Jadon Sancho will take more penalties for Manchester United despite missing in the Community Shield against Manchester City.
Sancho came off the bench in the 83rd minute after United had taken the lead through Alejandro Garnacho. However, Sancho’s only real impact on the game came during the penalty shootout as he missed a decisive spot-kick for his side. City went on to lift the trophy after Jonny Evans also missed in sudden death, condeming Ten Hag’s side to a disappointing loss at Wembley.
Sancho returned to United this summer after his loan spell with Dortmund last season, with the German side unable to afford to permanently bring the 24-year-old back to the club. Ten Hag insisted a ‘line had been drawn’ with Sancho after the pair’s falling out last season, which saw the winger exiled from the first team.
“I had no doubts about him,” Ten Hag said of Sancho after the defeat. “He’s a very good penalty taker and today he missed, but that’s part of the game. I am sure in the future he will take penalties.”
Sancho is expected to feature heavily for United in the coming weeks after Ten Hag revealed the English forward could be used up front, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee unavailable. However, despite reconciling with Ten Hag, Sancho’s future still remains uncertain, with the likes of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain still interested in signing him this summer.
