14-year-old ‘problem child’ plotted with boyfriend to murder her mother for taking phone away: Cops

Prosecutors in Michigan are charging a 14-year-old girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend as adults for allegedly hatching a scheme to murder her mother after mom took the girl’s phone away as a punishment.

A woman told police in Eastpointe, a suburb of Detroit, that an unknown male woke her up while she was sleeping around 4 a.m. July 14 at her home in the 24000 block of Roxana Avenue, cops said Tuesday in a press release. The male then picked up a pillow and tried to suffocate her before jumping on top of her and strangling her to the point she could not breathe, police said.

The victim screamed out for help and her mother came to her aid. Cops say the victim’s mother started yelling at the suspect, who said he “was sorry” before running out of the home. Officers later found a knife in the street from the home’s kitchen that the suspect apparently dropped while running away. He also had taken his shoes off in the home before attacking the victim.

“The victim suspected that her 14-year-old daughter was involved in the crime,” cops wrote. “She said that her daughter is a ‘problem child’ with a juvenile record. She said that her daughter does not like to follow house rules and is upset that her phone was taken away as punishment.”

Further investigation revealed that the mother’s intuition was on point, investigators say.

Cops say they later learned through surveillance video and interviews that the suspect was a 17-year-old boy the victim’s daughter had met online and started dating.

“Both suspects then came up with a plan to kill the victim so they could have more freedom of being together,” the press release said.

The Macomb County Prosecutors Office charged both teens as adults and each is facing serious prison time. The 14-year-old girl is charged with solicitation of murder and conspiracy to commit homicide. The solicitation charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison while the conspiracy charge carries a minimum sentence of 25 to 40 years.

In addition to conspiracy to commit murder, the 17-year-old also is facing assault with intent to murder. He’s in jail on a $2.5 million bond while the 14-year-old has a $1 million bond. Cops did not release their names because they are both minors.
